CALGARY OLYMPIC SADDLEDOME--TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE. SESSION 19

The Calgary Olympic Saddledome is no doubt one of the most striking new buildings in Calgary's Downtown. It offers spectators and athletes alike the best of available facilities as a home rink for the Calgary Flames and for the prestigious Olympic events to be staged there in 1988. such a stadium could not function efficiently, however, without an efficient means of transporting its users to and from the facility. The aim of this paper is to outline the transportation planning that went into both the choice of site and the detailed consideration of individual access facilities. An indication of initial operating experience and system monitoring has also been presented. With careful operation, the transportation system developed will cope efficiently with the demands placed upon it, and make a significant contribution to the Saddledome's continuing success.
