RESTORING MOBILITY IN HOUSTON, TEXAS
A 70-mile transitway system in Houston, TX, has been planned; all of that system should be operational by the year 2000, with the first exclusive lane becoming operational in 1984. The planning, design, funding, and construction of these facilities have, by necessity, involved a multi-agency effort. Each of the priority lane projects will, individually, represent a significant transportation improvement; together the projects will form a coordinated system that will greatly increase capacity and mobility during peak periods. While it is recognized that congestion will continue to exist, by pursuing a concerted, multi-agency effort, it is felt that mobility, once lost, can be at least partially restored. The freeway transitway concept is being aggressively pursued in Houston today. While only a small element of the total Regional Mobility Plan, it represents a primary means of serving the future growth that will be encouraged in the region.
