BRIDGE PROBLEMS BOOST SEVERN BARRAGE PLAN
A plan drawn by the civil engineering firm Wimpey Atkins combines a second Severn crossing and a tidal barrage. The barrage would run across the Severn estuary between Severn Reach in Avon and Sudbrook point in Gwent. It would be located 15 km West of the existing bridge which cannot cope with the heavy lorries crossing between England and Wales. The barrage would be approximately 6 km long, and have 42 turbines, each rated at 25 mw. The rising tide would be tapped by 56 sluices. The turbines would generate 2.43 terawatt hours of electricity, roughly a sixth of Wales' total needs. At a marginal cost a road crossing could be built on the barrage which would affect only two ports, Sharpness and Gloucester, link up easily with motorways, and have minimum environmental impact.
