THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF ENGINEERING STRUCTURES

IL COMPORTAMENTO DYNAMICO DELLE OPERE D'ARTE

This article deals mainly with the maintenance and monitoring of engineering structures by the use of non destructive methods of testing. The reasons for the application of dynamic analysis for overall control are examined and two operative proposals are made: (1) a laboratory experiment to determine the extent to which the defects in some sample beams are reflected in changes of dynamic behaviour (sensitivity test); (2) measure and examine the frequency spectra of selected viaducts under the random exitation of traffic, in order to derive the real vibration frequencies, or in other words the constant parameters in the absence of structural changes, but in such a way as to reflect any changes that have taken place. An overall surveillance system developed from these two studies, is outlined. (TRRL)
