THIRD IGS ANNUAL LECTURE - A CLOSE LOOK AT THE PROBLEMS OF RESEARCH AND ITS APPLICATION TO PILE FOUNDATIONS

The paper spotlights some of the important problems of research, design, construction and testing of pile foundations in Indian experience. Attention is drawn to the common pile defects as exemplified by field inspection of exhumed piles. For minimising such defects, the use of TV scanning of pile holes and non-destructive ultrasonic or vibration testing of pile quality is emphasized. Requirements of cement and steel in concrete piles; approaches for considering negative drag in estimating safety factor; and influences of pile cap, driving sequence and group effect are discussed. Some of the special piling systems such as granular piles, pedestal piles, boring precast piles, element piles, bored compaction piles and micro piles developed in India are commented upon. Finally, feed back studies and failure analyses through instrumentation are seen as a means of innovation and economy in construction. (TRRL)
