COMMENT ON THE FOURIER THEOREM
A persistent discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical drag curves obtained when analyzing the drag on ships and submarines with the aid of the Fourier theorem has been examined. It has been found that the rake survey is a valid technique for the determination of friction drag provided the rake is located where the velocity at the edge of the turbulent wake and the velocity in the wave train are nearly equal to the free-stream velocity. It is concluded that the use of the Fourier theorem for the interpretation of wave profiles should be modified so as to provide information about the flux of momentum between the undisturbed free surface and the elevated free surface.
