PSEUDO-STATIC ANALYSIS OF CLAY SLOPES SUBJECTED TO EARTHQUAKES

The paper presents a solution for the stability of slopes in purely cohesive soils exhibiting a linear variation in shear strength with depth; the strength at the surface is assumed to be greater than zero. The effect of seismicity is included in a quasi-static analysis. It is assumed that the potential failure surface is a circular arc. Taylor's charts and that provided by Gibson & Morgenstern can be derived from this paper with the incorporation of appropriate assumptions. A series of plots are provided that are of use in the assessment of the stability of slopes in soils whose strength is constant with depth, and/or whose strength varies linearly with depth.
