PEDESTRIANS AND MOTORISTS: THEIR PERCEPTION OF TRAFFIC AND THEIR OPINION REGARDING APPLICATION OF THE LAW
PIETON ET AUTOMOBILISTE: LA PERCEPTION DE LA CIRCULATION ET L'APPICATION PRESUMEE DE LA LOI
2526 persons were interviewed, drivers and pedestrians. Drivers consider the situation safer than previously, but the pedestrian is now more afraid. Police actions are considered positively by the two groups. Half of the drivers think the punishments are severe enough, but the pedestrians think they are too low. If a person such as a pedestrian is injured, most people expected the driver responsible to be put to prison, but in fact only 3% of the drivers are imprisoned. In the case of a fatal accident only 20% of the drivers are imprisoned and 60% are not even punished. For the covering abstract see TRIS 390481. (TRRL)
