MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT SEAT BELT AND CHILD RESTRAINT SURVEY 1983
This report presents the results of the Ministry of Transport 1983 occupant restraint survey. It is in two parts, part 1 for adults, part 2 for children. A total of 1359 adult occupants were surveyed in three cities in New Zealand. Belt wearing for front seat occupants remains high, at between 84 to 93 percent. Only 42 percent of rear seat passengers had belts available and use remains low. A total of 517 children were surveyed. About one quarter travel in the front seat. In the front seat restraint use varies from 20 to 87 percent, generally increasing with age. In the rear seat restraint use declines with age from 80 to 24 percent. There is evidence of a gradual improvement in the provision and use of restraints between 1982 and 1983. (TRRL)
