A SYSTEMS APPROACH TO AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL
Area traffic control (ATC) systems are now a major part of the infrastructure of many cities. Experience gained with these systems has identified limitations in previous ATC system designs. This paper describes a new approach in designing such systems to free the user of limitations imposed by strict traffic control strategies and system architecture. The system concept makes use of the well-known predictable nature of traffic and takes advantage of the application of microprocessor technology in its practical implementation. Examples are given to show the flexibility of such an approach in meeting varying user requirements, yet leaving open the possibility of future enhancements to take advantage of advances in traffic control theory.
