ENVIRONMENTAL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IN STOCKHOLM
The traffic improvement scheme covering part of the area of Stockholm known as Vasastaden was implemented in 1980. The aim of the experiment was to meet the objectives laid down in the traffic plan by applying speed control measures and closing a small number of streets. The speed limit in the zone within the boundary streets has been set at 30 km/h. On both main and access streets in the area, the risk that the planning targets set up by the municipal council for carbon monoxide and nitric oxide levels would be exceeded was previously low and has remained so after the improvement scheme. Traffic increases have been smallin relation to total traffic, and noise levels have therefore not increased significantly.
