BRIDGE
Chosen the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement of 1984, the Luling-Destrehan Cable Stayed Bridge sets a record U. S. span length, designed in steel to withstand hurricanes. Because cable stayed girder bridges have a low dead load to span ratio, and because of inherent flexibility, they may be subjected to undesirable oscillations under wind currents. The deck's wearing surface is 2 one quarter in. (57 mm) of epoxy asphalt concrete that was tested at Lehigh University where results led to the composition of the epoxy asphalt selected for this bridge. Fabrication of all members was by automatic welding, and field splices were made with high strength bolts. Almost all structural members are ASTM A588 steel that will not require painting.
