SOME ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE PLATFORM FOR THE NORTH SEA
Discusses the use of concrete as an offshore construction material and points to the long and successful use of concrete in the marine environment, which leads naturally to its role in the construction of offshore platform structures. The construction site chosen for this work will have an overriding effect on the design, depending on the depth of water available for the various stages of construction. The environmental forces, particularly wave action, are discussed and the methods of wave force evaluation are outlined, including the spectral approach. The critical role of the soil mechanics considerations is traced from fieldwork to the design processes; the importance of the sea bed interface is explained and the ground softening has been considered. The structural design process is discussed from the complex frame analysis and computer application to the use of limit state design methods with appropriate partial load and safety factors.
