GATEWAY BRIDGE

The main roads department called tenders in 1979 for construction and operation of a toll bridge facility across the lower reaches of the Brisbane River. As a result of that action, there is under construction today a $135 million, 1.6 km long box girder structure whose main span of 260 M is currently the longest of its type in the world. The paper records the life of the project to date from the original feasibility studies to the tender options of bridge or tunnel, the agreement between the Gateway Bridge Company, owners of the facility and the State of Queensland and the subsequent design and construction. The future life of the project, its toll collection arrangements and its importance in the road network of Brisbane are also discussed. (Author/TRRL)
