THE M-BAHN: A MAGNETIC-LEVITATION LOCAL TRANSPORT SYSTEM

The concept of the M-Bahn with permanent magnetic levitation, mechanical air-gap control, side guiding and long-stator linear motor represents an economical solution to local transport problems. Such a system has been under test since 1976 at a facility in Brunswick where more than 325,000 km have been run. Using further-developed components, a 1.6-km-long line is being built in a central location in West Berlin and is scheduled to commence a public transport service in 1986. The authors describe the design principal, the practical running aspects and the advantages compared with conventional systems.
