TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE
Much of the emphasis in the area of traffic management has been with sophisticated data gathering and display techniques made possible with the use of a variety of small and large computers. It almost seems that the gathering, analysis, and display of traffic flow data in a central Control Center is an end in itself. This is not to say that such techniques are not useful, but at the Bay Bridge the guiding premise has been that only data that will result in an effective response to reduce accidents and delay should be collected. The major effort has been to develop an interactive system to help the Bridge Tow Service personnel do a better job.
