INDEX PROPERTIES OF EXPANSIVE SOILS IN NEW SOUTH WALES
Index properties of expansive soils as documented from the results of laboratory tests on over 320 samples of expansive soils, collected from various parts of the state of New South Wales, are presented. The indices comprise the atterberg limits, linear shrinkage, swell pressure and swell percentage. Swelling tests carried out on remoulded samples prepared at standard optimum conditions were correlated with atterberg limits, linear shrinkage and the results of x-ray diffraction testing. Undisturbed samples were also tested and their swelling behaviour was compared with that of remoulded specimens. An arbitrary rating system was proposed for quick identification of soil expansivity based on these soil indices. (Author/TRRL)
