CRACKING MECHANISM OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS ABOVE UNDERGROUND CONDUITS

The operation of airport runways frequently requires the installation of conduits and utility sleeves to cross the runway at different longitudinal locations. The installation of such facilities creates quite a crucial problem when runways are constructed on swelling-clay subgrades. Under such conditions, pavement damage and distress, such as bumps and transverse cracking, usually develop. This paper describes two cases where cracks have developed, and gives the results of field testing conducted at the sites. An analytical model for the phenomena is presented. A finite element model of a conduit crossing runway was employed to study the stresses in the pavement due to the increase of moisture content of the clay. An improved model with concrete plate above the fill material is suggested to reduce the tensile stresses at the top of the pavement. (Author/TRRL)
