A TECHNIQUE TO PREDICT EXPANSIVE SOIL MOVEMENTS
A simple and relatively quick method is presented to enable the prediction of expansive soil movements from soil suction changes. The relationship between soil strain and suction change, termed the instability index, is derived and the core shrinkage test is proposed to obtain this index. Typical values of instability index obtained from the core shrinkage test are given. Predictions of the movement of a soil profile in an open field are shown to be in good agreement with observations. (Author/TRRL)
