LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY FOR MEASURING PROPERTIES OF EXPANSIVE CLAYS
This paper describes laboratory soil technology which is relevant to the solution of practical geotechnical problems involving expansive clays. It is pointed out that the engineering problems and tests are substantially different from those that arise with saturated clays. In the case of reactive, unsaturated soils the most useful laboratory approach is one based upon the direct measurement of parameters with special consideration being paid to the simulation of environmental changes. Relatively inexpensive but reliable techniques for the measurement of total suction, instability index, shear strength and stiffness for use in large building, light structural or road pavement applications are presented.
