SHEAR STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT IN EXPANSIVE SOIL WITH AND WITHOUT CNS SURCHARGE

Shear strength development in expansive soil is studied under varying thicknesses of cohesive non-swelling soil layer in large scale devices. An attempt is made to evaluate shear parameters of samples prepared in conventional shear testing devices such that the density and internal stress conditions of the samples closely represent the intended corresponding sample at no volume change zone from field or large scale devices. These studies indicate that the shear strength development in an expansive soil system is different from that of a conventional soil system with respect to overburden stress. The shear strength appears to remain constant up to overburden stress in the vicinity of swelling pressure of soil. (Author/TRRL)
