THE GENESIS, MINERALOGY AND IDENTIFICATION OF EXPANSIVE SOILS
The formation of expansive soils is shown to occur, in general, under similar geological, geomorphological and climatic conditions. A review of data on over 1800 South Australian soils, covering a wide range of swelling potentials, shows that they contain little montmorillonite and that their swelling properties depend largely on the presence of mixed-layer minerals. Several empirical correlations between estimated swelling potential and observed swell are reviewed and it is shown that only one is suitable to describe the South Australian soils studies.
