SIGNAL COORDINATION AND FUEL EFFICIENCY: WINSTON-SALEM'S EXPERIENCE
The equation F equals 0.0425 VMT plus 0.60 VHT; where; F equals Fuel consumption in Gallons; VMT equal Vehicle Miles of Travel; and VHT equals Vehicle Hours of Travel-represents a method for estimating the order of magnitude of various energy efficiency strategies. The formula was derived from research conducted at General Motors, and is based on the 1976 Fleet of Automobiles. As input to this formula, a series of travel time studies were conducted on two streets in Winston-Salem. The travel time data was collected under two conditions: (1) without the computerized traffic control system running (no coordination); and (2) with the computerized traffic control system running (coordinated operation). Data on vehicle miles of travel were developed from 8-hour turning movement counts and inputted to the formulas. Differences between fuel use and VHT were calculated.
