INNOVATIONS IN SEWERS REHABILITATION METHODS

This article reviews some techniques that have become standard for sewer rehabilitation in Great Britain. There are two forms of stabilization, pointing (done in man-entry sewers to repair defective brickwork (with cement-based mortars being most commonly used) and joint sealing (using chemical grouting processes in both man-entry and non-man-entry sewers). Pipe linings are available in glass reinforced plastic and polyolefin, as well as Insitu form which involves inversion of a resin-impregnated "sock" lining into the sewer, which is cured insitu using hot water circulating inside the lining. Also available are segmental linings made of glass reinforced cement, glass-reinforced plastic, and pre-cast gunite. The precast gunite units are formed by spraying mortar onto molds on which steel reinforcemetn mesh has been placed. Three systems are being developed for man-entry sewers. The fiber-reinforced plastic pipe system uses phenolic resins, which are strong and light and have excellent chemical and abrasive resistance. Another system involves assembly of interlocking PVC panels in the sewer. The third is a modification of the insitu gunite system. There are two systems for sectional lining of sewers using polyethylene pipes installed through existing manholes. In one, pipes are installed individually and can be pre-drilled above ground to allow lateral connections to be made. The other is installed by building up the lining attachment of further pipes in the manhole and gradually winching the whole lining into position so it can be drilled for lateral connections. Under development are several systems for spray-lining existing sewers with a smooth, resilient coating, making possible localized repairs. Currently, many renovation systems require total manhole lengths to be treated although defects on sewers are often localized. Advances have been made in sewer preparation and cleaning where high-pressure water jets can be used with a range of cutters to remove protouding lateral connections, heavy scales, tree roots or affected pipe material. Mechanical equipment has also been developed to cut lateral connections, e.g. edge cutting mills and connical boring heads.
