THE NOTION OF GEOTEXTILES AS SEPARATORS IN ROADS
The paper briefly reviews a limited number of case histories of field trials and laboratory studies to demonstrate those effects attributable to separation and those associated with other geotextile functions such as reinforcement, drainage and filtration. Although separation may be present in static or dynamic situations, lack of experimental data limits the study to the more widely researched field of temporary and permanent pavements. Results show that a geotextile at the sub-base/subgrade interface does not have a unique function and varies according to the type of construction and subgrade. Reinforcement and macro-separation are the prime functions of unbound granular material over a weak subgrade. Failures are often associated with slippage or tearing of the fabric and can be due to inadequate anchorage or design of overlap. Over stronger subgrade, the geotextile could be a dynamic filler or micro-separator. Many recent pavement failures have been attributed to the incursion of fines into high permeability granular sub-bases. (TRRL)
