MI WIDENING IN HERTFORDSHIRE

The M1 motorway was first opened to traffic in 1959. Flows at that time were 16000 vpd, but by 1979 they had risen to 70000 vpd. A section of the motorway in Hertfordshire had originally been constructed to dual two lane standard. This paper considers the aspects that influenced the design of the improvement of this two lane section and the difficulties the contractor, John Laing Construction, had during the three year construction period. Traffic management, site access, earthworks, construction of the M10 overbridge and A414 overbridge are discussed. Rigid construction was used for the new southbound carriageway. The specifications for this and for flexible construction which was used in some areas, and also for overlaying are given. A lighting system was designed. The contract was completed in November 1983.
