SIMPLE CYCLIC LOADING IN SOIL MECHANICS

Hydraulically operated triaxial apparatus can easily be adapted for cyclic loading by adding a hydrodynamic pulsator, and by employing limiters to keep the maximum and minimum values of load unchanged. Such a cyclic triaxial apparatus is described. A ball-bearing which rotates at a frequency 100 rev/min, is eccentrically placed on the shaft of the gearbox of the asynchronous electric motor. The rotational movement of the bearing is transformed into linear movement of the rod, which is in contact with the circular rubber membrane, continuously fastened around the edge. The membrane separates the pressure system of the hydraulic motor from the atmosphere and during one cycle pushes out an amount of water V, which depends on the value of eccentricity. Loading of the soil will be strain controlled, but a system of springs transforms it to one of load control. The course of the force will be altered. The functioning of the cyclic loading described was very reliable over the period of one year. (TRRL)
