SIZE-FOR-SIZE REPLACEMENT SHOWN OFF

The article describes the replacement of cracked sewer pipes using impact moling at a site in Winchester where some 800 M of old 9 inch salt glazed clay pipe was replaced with 250 mm diameter polythene pipe. At this site, 1 M long pipes were used with a free joint between the driving unit and the pipe and a chain-tensioning system to pre-stress the pipe. An accurate survey, correct to plus or minus 0.25 per cent, of the existing underground services was required. Lateral connections to the pipe are currently carried out from a series of small pits, using vacuum excavation or by impressive and fast auger bit, but remote connection is being investigated. The specially developed pipe is a modified hdpe with snap- lock joints incorporating a flexible sealant, although it is claimed that joints are water-tight without any sealant. Tests on the drive unit showed no vibration was transmitted beyond 1.5 M from the mole. (TRRL)
