SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF NONPRESTRESSED REINFORCEMENT ENSURES DURABILITY OF PRESTRESSED SUPERSTRUCTURE

DOSTATNA KOLICINA NENAPETE ARMATURE JAMCI TRAJNOST PREDNAPETOGA RASPONSKOGA SKLOPA

The causes of the cracking (small number of moderately wide cracks) of a continuous prestressed concrete road interchange are considered. The author ascribes the cracking to the fact that the amount of nonprestressed reinforcement is not sufficient to resist the bending moments due to restrained displacements. These displacements would take place under the influence of temperature gradient (which is generally underestimated in many codes of practice). It is pointed out that the excess of prestressing tendons and concrete cross-section areas, although considerably affecting the total costs, does not essentially contribute to a better cracking behaviour of the structure, while a relatively small additional amount of nonprestressed reinforcement virtually ensures its durability.
