BRIDGE OVER THE RIJEKA DUBROVACKA BAY

MOST PREKO RIJEKE DUBROVACKE

This article outlines the design considerations used in the preliminary design of the bridge over the Rijeka Dubrovacka bay. This bridge has considerable touristic and traffic value. Following the urban planning conditions established by the Urban Planning Institute of the city of Dubrovnik, seven different types of bridge design were considered: concrete tubular girder bridges of varying spans, steel tubular girder bridges with inclined legs, stiffened suspension bridges and cable-stayed bridges. After detailed analysis of these solutions with regard to functionality, economy and aesthetics, the cable-stayed system was adopted, the only one among those considered to fulfill all urban planning conditions. The chosen system, according to parametric studies of the available literature, is economically the best solution for the least cost. The bridge is aesthetically very pleasing in appearance, has a clean line and blends easily with its surroundings. Basic parameters from the preliminary design are listed for the alternatives considered in steel and concrete. A structural analysis was carried out in detail including the critical erection phases. The internal forces were chosen in such a way that plastic deformations of the concrete parts and redistribution through creep and shrinkage are kept to a minimum. (TRRL)
