CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE IN REMOTE AREAS: LASSETER HIGHWAY CASE STUDY

This paper describes some of the technical and managerial problems encountered during the construction of the Lasseter Highway. The Lasseter Highway is a low cost two lane rural highway which traverses flat grasslands on the eastern end and undulating sand dunes to the west. Located in Central Australia, the road services Ayers Rock and Yulara Tourist Village. The area is subject to climatic extremes of heat and cold and suffers from the effects of remoteness and isolation. The 246 km of road was constructed over a five year period at a cost of $15.3 M.
