RECENT EXPERIENCES AND DEVELOPMENTS IN DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF CEMENT STABILISED PAVEMENTS
In recent years, the usage of cement stabilisation has increased markedly in Queensland due to the influence of several factors but particularly the depletion of natural resources and the increase in traffic loadings. The paper illustrates procedures for design of stabilised pavements and these are shown to produce economically attractive alternatives to conventional unbound pavements particularly in circumstances with weak subgrades and heavy traffic. It has been found, however, that particular care must be taken in constructing stabilised pavements to produce a successful end product capable of providing satisfactory performance. Control of additive contents, achievement of density and the provision of adequate surface finish are identified in the paper as requiring special consideration. An appreciation and understanding of material behaviour is required if stabilised pavements are to be used effectively in a wide range of circumstances. To this end, laboratory studies of material behaviour have been initiated and these are supplemented by field trials at several sites throughout Queensland. The paper summarizes findings of these studies and suggests topics for further research. (Author/TRRL)
