SELECTED PROBLEMS ON NORTHERN TERRITORY ROADS

Roads are engineering structures imposed on a variable environment. In remote and sparsely populated areas low cost methods must be adopted if maximum penetration of the network is to be achieved. Whilst inspection of the site precedes each job, it is often difficult to prepare a thoroughly detailed design in such areas due to distance and cost as well as due to extreme seasonal influences. Yet simple mistakes can require relatively costly rehabilitation. Five cases are used to illustrate simple points which reinforce the responsibilities facing the engineer. These cover the use of plastic clays in embankments, substandard base materials, the use of "sandclay" and compaction of cement modified gravels. The aim of the paper is to acquaint the design engineer with typical problems that occur during and after construction. (Author/TRRL)
