THE 1981 MODEL E FORD

Ford's 1981 Model E (for Erika or Escort) cars, including the Mercury Lynx, are described. They feature four-cylinder CVH (compound valve hemi-) engines. Evolution of the following Escort/Lynx subsystems is discussed: engines, transaxles, suspensions, bodies, and packaging. When production plans are completed, options will include four bodies, two engines, three transmissions, and four trim levels. These models are the final product of a $3 billion development program and represent Ford's first world car. Variants of the car for the European and Asia/Pacific markets are indicated.
