THE ROUNDABOUT THAT ISN'T
In recent years, roundabouts have been constructed at many intersections on the local, arterial and rural road system. Unfortunately, the geometry of some intersections, particularly skewed intersections or at locations where a staggered "T" occurs, makes the installation of a roundabout questionable. This technical note briefly describes an "impellor" system of controlling traffic that has recently been used in the cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn in Melbourne. The basis of the design, the features of the system, their construction and their effectiveness in controlling traffic speed, traffic volume and accidents are described. The ability of the driver to understand the system is also discussed. Three particular treatments are described in some detail. (Author/TRRL)
