COMPARATIVE TESTS FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF BITUMEN MODULI

ESSAIS COMPARATIFS DE MESURES DE MODULES D'UN BITUME

The results of the measurements carried out by five different laboratories on the stiffness moduli of bitumen are presented in this paper. The measuring techniques used refer to various types of stress and different levels of strain (bending cycles, shearing cycles, cycles of tension and conpression, creep under shearing conditions, annular pumping). Notwithstanding these different experimental conditions, the dispersion in the values of the measured moduli is relatively small (approximately a factor 2) considering the extent of the range covered by these values for different temperatures at different loading times. It should be worthwhile to continue investigations in order to have a better understanding and even reduce the causes of the observed dispersion (equipment, effect of non-linearity, influence of Poisson's ratio). From a practical point of view and taking into account the determination of the moduli of the bituminous mixtures for the design of road structures (thickness of layers), the obtained precision is satisfactory, considering the sensitivity of the thickness to the values of the moduli of these mixtures, moduli which are partly conditioned by the moduli of the binder.
