DETERMINATION OF THE THERMIC SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE VISCOSITY OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS ABOVE 60 DEGREES C

DETERMINATION DE LA SUSCEPTIBILITE THERMIQUE DE LA VISCOSITE DES LIANTS HYDROCARBONES AU-DELA DE 60 C

Viscosity and temperature-viscosity investigations have been carried out with the falling ball viscometer in the high temperature range (60 to 150 C) on various types of bituminous binders. Within the temperature range in which the binders flow as Newtonian liquids, the physico-chemical interpretation of the results shows that, as regards the viscosity-temperature relation, there exists analogy between the Newtonian flow of bituminous binders and that of polymers, which can be satisfactorily expressed by an equation. In practice, the measurement of the Newtonian viscosity of bituminous binders at two temperatures (100 and 135 C for instance) by means of the falling ball viscometer test and the utilization of the equation allow an easy selection of pumping, mixing, laying and surface dressing temperatures.
