EVALUATION OF THE FORMER HEALTH SELECTION OF CANDIDATES FOR DRIVERS AND FOR DRIVERS OF THE D GROUP

VALORIZACIJA DOSADASNJE ZDRAVSTVENE SELEKCIJE KANDIDATA ZA VOZACE I VOZACA VOZILA D KATEGORIJE

By far the largest number of passengers today travel by road. Although the number of passenger cars is increasing, bus travel retains its importance and popularity. Public transport services in cities and companies covering larger regional areas provide safe bus transport for thousands of passengers. Since each bus can carry a considerable number of passengers at one time, it is essential to ensure safe driving. It has been proved that driver errors are the most frequent causes of accidents. A bus passenger runs the risk of sustaining an injury or getting killed which is several times greater than that of a passenger in a passenger car. The paper analyses health status and medical estimation of fitness to drive in applicants for a driving licence and in drivers of road motor vehicles of the D group. The material has been gathered from medical files of driving licence applicants and drivers who had been examined in the research centre for medicine and psychology of traffic (Zagreb) over a period of five years (from 1974 to 1978). Subjects have been analysed by age, length of service and patterns of morbidity. Special attention is drawn to the estimation of their fitness to drive in respect of the requirements of their job, patterns of morbidity and legislative regulations. Recommendations for changes in legislative regulation are given especially in the domain of medical selection and prevention. (TRRL)
