SAFE HANDLNG OF PETROLEUM BITUMENS. TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO.5. MARCH 1981
This bulletin draws attention to the potential hazards associated with bitumen and recommends guidelines for safe handling. For these purposes the term bitumen unless otherwise qualified, refers to penetration, hard, oxidised grades also cutback grades made with petroleum distillates, and bitumen emulsions. This is not intended to be a safety code and it should not be used as a substitute for the suppliers own information on the product. The major considerations involved in handling bitumen are associated with:- (1) the high handling temperature and the need for purpose designed equipment; (2) the flammable nature of some grades; (3) the need to safeguard the health of personnel; (4) the training of personnel.
