APPRAISAL OF LOAD TEST ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA SPECIFIED IN IS:456-1978

Of the two acceptance criteria laid down in IS:456-1978 code of practice for plain and reinforced concrete (third revision) for the load test performed on RCC structures to gauge their structural strength, one is based on the maximum deflection under a superimposed load for a specified period. The authors feel that this criterion, as prescribed in the standard, is not a reliable guide for deciding on the strength of RCC structures and suggest a modification in the relationship governing the maximum permissible deflection.
