DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS FOR LIMIT STATE OF DEFLECTION IN ACCORDANCE WITH IS:456-1978

Numerical examples of deflection of practical slabs and beams show that there is no parity of the two approaches of the code of practice for plain and reinforced concrete (IS:456-1978) in regard to control and computation of deflection given for safety of bending members against excessive deflection. A method has been suggested here by which the two approaches of the code are made to lead to the same depth of section, satisfying the allowable limits of deflection given by the code. A numerical example is given to illustrate the method. (Author/TRRL)
