INVESTIGATIONS OF THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF OPC/PULVERISED FUEL ASH CONCRETE: STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT AND MATURITY
This paper describes an investigation of the strength development of ordinary portland cement (opc)/pulverised fuel ash (pfa) concrete designed for a specified workability and 28-day strength (with standard curing) equivalent to that of the corresponding opc concrete, covering a very wide range of strength grades, pfa quality, curing temperatures and age at test. It is shown that such a concrete also achieves comparable strength to opc concrete at earlier ages, with much higher strengths at later ages. Since the mix design method used takes account of ash quality, the strengths of concrete with individual ashes are closely grouped around their mean and the differences in ash quality are reflected in the economics of achieving a given strength in terms of the cement saved and ash used. Increasing the curing temperature benefits the strength development of opc/pfa concrete more than opc concrete, although for both the optimum strength is achieved at progressively lower temperatures with increasing duration of curing. A single linear strength-maturity relationship is confirmed for opc concrete for 5-40 degrees C curing temperatures up to a maturity limit of 50000 degrees c.h. For opc/pfa concrete the relationship is generally curvilinear and dependent on the curing temperature employed. (Author/TRRL)
