AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS. PART 1: DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY

The increasing trend to equip present and future dashboard instrumentation partly with electronic displays is a result of the great scope for innovation that the application of electronics offers the automobile engineer. For instance, in the area of driver information, additional information to that already continuously displayed is automatically triggered in critical situations, or in answer to the driver's questions. As a result, the density of information offered to the driver increases, while at the same time he is relieved of dispensable observation. This development is reflected in products like the master monitoring system and the trip computer (e.g. The multiple function display of VW). In view of the growth of information, it is obviously desirable on the display side to assign multiple functions to the restricted display area within the driver's view, a task to which electronic display technologies, in particular, lend themselves. Electronic display systems are also suitable because they are directly compatible with automotive electronics and, particularly, with microprocessors, which enjoy increasing application in the automotive industry.
