MOUNT VERNON MEMORIAL PARKWAY

Completed in 1932, the Mount Vernon Parkway between Mount Vernon and the Arlington Memorial Bridge was built to commemorate the 200th birthday of George Washington. The concrete section of the highway was cast in 9-, 10- and 11-foot lanes; each lane was placed 8 inches thick with 10-inch-thick edges. After forms were set to line and grade, subgraders were pulled between forms to produce the final subgrade profile. Dump trucks loaded at the proportioning plant with the proper amounts of aggregate, sand and cement hauled these dry batched materials to the paving site and discharged them into a paver which mixed batches of slightly more than a cubic yard.
