The article is the first in a series on asphalt concrete pavement compaction techniques and equipment. It lays some groundwork for the series by defining basic terms, by discussing the general reasons that proper compaction can help extend the life of asphalt pavements, and by touching on ways in which proper compaction can troubleshoot specific pavement problems such as cracking, rutting, oxidation, stripping and deformation.
