DESIGN AND OPERATION OF A MICROCOMPUTER-BASED ARTERIAL TRAFFIC SIGNAL MONITOR
US 85 (South Santa Fe Drive) exists as a principal arterial serving north and southbound traffic in the south central portion of the Denver Metropolitan area. The four-lane facility accommodates considerable commercial traffic as well as normal commuter traffic to the Central Business District. With 8 traffic signals to be located within 3 miles, it was determined that signal coordination was necessary in order to provide for the reasonable flow of traffic. The objective of the project was to develop an on-street microcomputer system to provide cycle length, split and offset information. The system was designated to select timing plans by sampling traffic using threshold switching.
