WILL TRADITIONAL "BIG CAR" CUSTOMERS BUY DOWNSIZED C-CARS?

A new line of downsized, front-wheel-drive (fwd) C-cars by General Motors (GM) is described. GM is planning to sell these cars to traditional "big car" customers and to bring a younger, but equally affluent new customer to the brand. The cars are substantially smaller in every dimension. Using the new Buick Electra as an example, the 1985 fwd C-car is 25 in. smaller and 600 lb lighter than the '84 Electra it replaces. The C-cars suspensions consist of MacPherson strut with wide lower control arm in the front. In the rear is independent suspension with springs mounted separately from the in-board strut to decouple road loads. The front bushings are tuned for isolation; the rear for handling loads.
