FURTHER REDUCTIONS IN COST OF OVERHEAD LINE EQUIPMENT ON BRITISH RAILWAYS
The search for improved performance, greater economies and reduction in maintenance costs of overhead line equipment is a continuous process. An account is given in this paper of a further number of developments unertaken by British Railways that demonstrate the progress being made in achieving these objectives. The integration of various computerised systems into a fully integrated system covering all aspects of electrification activities has only just began but progress to date has been most rewarding. The use of new technology and materials has given the opportunity to improve designs and systems of inspection of the completed overhead catenary system. Finally advanced technology has been applied to maintenance equipment thus improving performance of staff during normal and emergency maintenance periods.
