NERDDP MOTOR VEHICLE FUEL CONSERVATION PROGRAM - DRIVING PATTERN AND FUEL CONSUMPTION DATA COLLATION: FINAL REPORT
At the 1981 NERDDP motor vehicle fuel conservation program workshop, the decision was made, with unanimous support, to collate all the driving pattern and fuel consumption data obtained by the several research teams participating in the program. This report contains the three reports and one paper arising from the collation effort. This effort was in two parts: the first, the gathering of the data and storing them on two magnetic tapes now housed in the tape library of the Australian Road Research Board for future access, and the second, the analysis of the driving pattern data to provide quantitative comparisons between driving patterns of four major Australian cities, namely Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. The paper reports further comparison of driving patterns with driving cycles such as AS 2077 and quantifies their suitability for representing driving in Australian capital cities. It is judged that Melbourne and Sydney driving is similar in most characteristics and the Melbourne peak cycle encompasses a more representative spectrum of city driving patterns than the AS 2077 city cycle, although there are arguments for retaining this cycle (or its successor ADR 37) for compatability with international fuel consumption and emissions test cycles.
