USER'S INSTRUCTIONS FOR SOUND32 (CALTRANS VERSION OF FHWA HIGHWAY NOISE PREDICTION AND BARRIER COST REDUCTION PROCEDURE, STAMINA 2.01 OPTIMA)

The FHWA Barrier Cost Reduction (BCR) Procedure was modified to be compatible with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) timeshare computer system and current policies and procedures in highway noise prediction and barrier design. In the modification process the FHWA programs STAMINA 2.0 and OPTIMA have been merged into one program named SOUND32. Major modifications and improvements in the Caltrans version include: program's ability to calculate correct accoustic results in multiple barrier situations such as barriers behind top of cut sections or overlapping barriers; zero height barrier yielding same accoustical results as no barrier; earth berm calculations per FHWA-RD-77-108; 1980 California barrier cost factors for various materials; revised input to permit greater compatibility with input files of earlier Caltrans programs; development of a separate program, Line of Sight (LOS), which uses SOUND32 input data files and calculates line of sight breaks between 11.5' truck stack heights and receivers along the barrier alignment (a current California requirement); and greater program versatility through expanded data change options. SOUND32 is now operational and accessible on the California statewide VM/CMS timeshare computer system. This report comprises the user's instructions for SOUND32 and its applications. The User's Manual was used to conduct four training courses for Caltrans personnel in July 1983. It is anticipated this procedure will save 5 to 15 percent in the cost barrier design and construction. (FHWA)
